The fact that he went insane in his mid-40s may be a hint that at least some of it is just the ramblings of a madman. Though his reputation has been largely salvaged from the stain of Nazism, even Walter Kaufmann, the man who did more than anyone in rehabilitating Nietzsche's image, said, "My disagreements with him are legion." Whatever else may be said, things like Compassion and Equality were not well regarded by Nietzsche. Even the foremost scholars on Nietzsche struggle to define what exactly he believed. Interpretations of Nietzsche vary wildly. Nietzsche is one of the few philosophical writers one might conceivably read simply for the joy of reading his prose. In any event, his aphorisms can be quoted often whatever one thinks of his ideas, he is one of the unquestionable masters of the German Language. What made his books so popular? Good question. It didn't end well for him back in his day, though, as he went nuts and soon died in his fifties. Nowadays, he is often placed among the most influential philosophers of all time.
